Cardiology

Managed by a private non-profit foundation, the Cardio Centro in Ticino is a highly specialized cardio-clinic and a university center of national and international significance.

Built in 1999 in Lugano, the largest city in the Italian part of Switzerland only 40 minutes away from the international airport of Milano-Malpensa and 2,5 hours away from Zurich. Cardio Centro is located in one of the most beautiful parts of Europe, characterized by great climate, Italian cuisine and Swiss quality and efficiency.

According to the vision of its founders, in the past twelve years, the Cardio Centro in Ticino has become one of the main centers of Swiss expertise in the areas of cardiology, cardiac surgery and cardiac anesthesia. In the spring of 2012 Cardio Centro has become part of the University of Zurich. In 2004 the Cardio Centro Ticino has performed the first transplant of stem cells in a patient with acute myocardial infarction. Since then, the Cardiocentro of Lugano has formed a unit of Cellular Therapy, and has made “a clean room”, where they are prepared for the stem cell therapy. Today there are numerous clinical trials, the most important aims to treat persons affected by myocardial infarction involving 150 patients across Switzerland. At the basis of the team’s work led by Professor Tiziano Moccetti is "the awareness that stem cells are virtually able to regenerate many types of tissues involved in several human
diseases."

Cardio Centro now has the most advanced cardiac imaging technologies: three-dimensional echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography "super fast".

The evolution of minimally invasive surgery, where Cardio Centro has decades of experience, is leading the way for robotic surgical systems, the most advanced of which - Da Vinci S – is part of the technology used at Cardio Centro.

Cardio Centro today can offer its patients less invasive surgical techniques and  the latest procedures for cardiac catheterization.
Cardio Centro, today as yesterday, intends to pursue the principles: efficiency and excellence, that gave birth to this state of the art cardiac clinic in Ticino 12 years ago.
